![]() It's days before the 20th anniversary of Sylvain Leduc's horrific death - and his family is physically wearing the grief. His grandmother, Theresa McCuaig, and mother, Carole Maheux, sat down to talk with the Sun about the 17-year-boy they lost in 1995 at the hands of Ace Crew. The anniversary is always a difficult time for them, and for Maheux, the tears are impossible to hold back.Īsked to talk about Leduc, though, the atmosphere in the room changes immediately. This mother and daughter team are tight, as close as they can be. The tears are soon replaced with laughter, both roll their eyes when asked to describe him, and the stories begin. "He was a beautiful looking boy," McCuaig says immediately. He didn't run into an aunt on the street without yelling across the street, I love you 'Ma tante.' He always had a big hug and a kiss for them." "He was loved dearly and he was very sensitive. McCuaig tells a story of taking Sylvain and his brother, Dan, to Florida with her husband, Al. Sylvain was intent on getting a pearl from the ocean for his mother. The second day they're there, he tripped on an open pipe, cut open his leg and needed more than 20 stitches. That meant he couldn't go into the ocean. He wasn't upset for himself, just disappointed he get couldn't give his mom the pearl he'd promised her.Īs luck would have it, the foursome stopped at a restaurant that let you fish for a pearl from a tank. His prize ended up being the biggest pearl that tank held. All was right with his world.Īs the stories are being told, Maheux starts laughing again, recalling the day her first-born applied for a job. There was an application to fill out, one question asking who to contact in case of emergency.Īfter all this time, she still laughs at the thought.
